ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s draft 22nd amendment to the constitution will be debated in parliament on October 06 and 07, a statement said.

The Committee on Parliamentary Business has set aside the two dates for a debate on the draft 22nd Constitutional Amendment Bill, a statement from parliament said Thursday September 29 afternoon.

Parliament is scheduled to convene from next Monday October 03 to Friday October 07.

The amendment bill was recently cleared by the Supreme Court for approval with a two thirds majority subject to a few changes.

The bill aims to restore independent commissions and also trim some of the powers of the president.

Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe has said the proposed 22nd amendment, while being based on the 19th amendment, will transcend the latter’s democratic features while also retaining the more progressive aspects of the 20th amendment.
